Be Still in the Storm
(Based on Episode 1 “Be Still in the Storm” with Gentry & Hadley Eddings)
What You’ll Learn
Grief hits like waves. But God’s presence holds like solid ground. In this opening session, Gentry & Hadley share how “be still and know” became their lifeline in tragedy—and how you can apply it to find peace in the storm.
Finding God’s Peace in the Storm
Loss comes in many forms—death, broken relationships, lost health, or financial hardship. Gentry shares:
Grief is like the waves of the ocean. Sometimes small. Sometimes so big they knock you off your feet.
We’ve all been there—trying to stand up while sorrow crashes over us. The question is: How do you find steady ground?
A Verse Spoken by a Child
On May 22, 2015, during a joyful family wedding weekend, Gentry and Hadley share how they were arguing over something unimportant. Then their two-year-old son, Dobbs, surprised them by reciting Psalm 46:10:
Be still and know that I am God.
It was a simple moment that stopped them in their tracks and softened their hearts. They didn’t know how prophetic that verse would be.
The Storm Hits
The next day, everything changed. A distracted driver under the influence crashed into the Eddings’ car. Their son Dobbs died at the scene. Hadley and Gentry were rushed to the ER, where Hadley, 36 weeks pregnant, had an emergency C-section. Their newborn son Reed was delivered, but he passed away two days later from accident-related injuries.
Hadley shares:
The grief of losing your children is beyond words. We were overwhelmed with emotions.
In the darkness of loss, Dobbs’ recited verse became a lifeline. God was whispering through their little boy: “Be still and know that I am God.”
God’s Presence in Our Pain
Psalm 46:1-2 says:
“God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear…”
God is not absent in your storm. Like a lighthouse on solid rock, God’s presence does not move—even when massive waves crash. Gentry explains:
“Our lives can stand firm in the storm because we stand on the solid ground of God’s faithfulness.”
Choosing to Trust When It Hurts
Grief can make it hard to believe God’s promises. The Eddings didn’t have all the answers. But they chose to believe God was still in control—that He would give them peace in the storm. That choice anchored them when everything else felt broken.
Hadley encourages: “Let God be your refuge and solid ground in the storm. He sees you and cares for you in the struggle.”
Reflection Question
Where do you need God’s steady presence right now? In what “storm” of grief or loss is He inviting you to “be still and know” He is God?
Prayer
Lord, when the waves of grief crash over me, help me to stand on the solid rock of Your faithfulness. Remind me that You are my refuge and strength. Teach me to be still and know You are God—even in the storm. In Jesus’ name, amen.
