Walking As Jesus Walked
*”Walking as Jesus Walked” is based on Episode 1, “Jesus Prayed,” and Episode 2, “Fellowship With God Through Prayer,” in Pastor Terrell Murphy’s Strengthen Your WalkTM series The Power of Prayer.*
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power
and the glory forever. Amen.
(Matthew 6:9–13 NKJV).
The Power of Walking With God
The journey with God is incredible, filled with both challenges and victories. As believers, we often seek strength and direction to move forward in the calling God has placed on our lives. The key to walking in greater dimensions of faith and purpose is centered in one essential practice—prayer.
In Luke 11:1 (ESV) , the disciples made a remarkable request:
“Lord, teach us how to pray.”
It’s the only place in the Scriptures where they explicitly asked Jesus to teach them anything.
“Now I know for me, that would have been something different. I would have been saying, ‘Teach me how to walk on water. Teach me how to turn water to wine—or teach me how to slip through the crowd!’ All of those types of things would have been what I would have been pursuing.” —Terrell Murphy
What about you? What would you have asked for?
Instead, the disciples said, “Teach us how to pray.” They had witnessed His miracles, but His prayer life captivated them. When they saw the results of His time with the Father, they were really ready to integrate this activity into their lives. But they needed help doing it.
Most of us can relate! We long to see the fruit of a strong prayer life but sometimes feel like our prayers aren’t getting results. That’s why understanding the principles of prayer is so important. God is not a respecter of persons—He is a respecter of principles.
When we align ourselves with His ways, we gain access to open doors, divine encounters, and answered prayers.
Prayer As a Lifestyle
For Jesus, prayer wasn’t just an occasional practice—it was:
- A way of life
- His ongoing conversation with His Father
- His source of strength and guidance
Likewise, prayer should be our most important conversation each day.
God invites us to communicate with Him constantly, no matter where we are or what we’re doing. He calls us to “come boldly to the throne of grace” (Hebrews 4:16 NKJV), to share our hearts with Him, and to listen as He speaks to us. Jesus modeled this deep relationship with the Father, and He wants us to cultivate the same level of intimacy and connection.
God’s Desire for Fellowship
Prayer has always been God’s chosen means for us to communicate with Him. In Genesis 3:8 we read,
“They [Adam and Eve] heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day” (ESV).
We don’t know if this is something God did every day. But this is something God did, and He still wants that kind of closeness with His creation. He is not distant or unreachable. He is a relational God. We often make Him so big and so far away, but God is as close to you as your hand. He draws near, waiting for us to draw close to Him and listen to His voice through His Word.
One of the most beautiful aspects of prayer is that it aligns our hearts with God’s desires. As Psalm 37:4 tells us,
“Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart” (ESV).
This doesn’t mean we can ask for anything we want and expect it to happen. Instead, as we spend time in God’s presence, our desires begin to reflect His. He instills in us the things we should long for, shaping our hearts to align with His perfect will.
The Lord’s Prayer As a Model
True success and significance in the Christian life comes to us by following biblical patterns. Over 2,000 years ago, Jesus provided the ultimate model of prayer—the Lord’s Prayer. This prayer is more than just words to recite. It’s a blueprint for how we can connect with our Father like Jesus did.
Through prayer, we receive divine instruction, wisdom, and the heart of God. We experience transformation and walk in the fullness of His will when we pray faithfully. As we grow in our prayer life, we will see God move in ways we never imagined—leading us into a deeper relationship with Him and greater effectiveness in our calling.
Conclusion
Walking as Jesus walked begins with walking in prayer. Just as the disciples did, we too must develop a prayer life that brings us closer to our Father. Through prayer, we gain wisdom, strength, and alignment with God’s heart. As we continue this journey, may we embrace prayer as a daily conversation with God, knowing that it leads to a life of power, purpose, and divine connection.
